Volunteers are at the heart of WAGEC’s work. Across our programs, offices, events and refuges, volunteers help create safe, welcoming spaces where people can heal, recover and rebuild.
As a WAGEC volunteer, you can expect:

I love the enthusiasm and energy of the staff and their unwavering commitment to supporting women and children. Their passion inspires me to show up each week and help however I can.”
There’s more than one way to volunteer with WAGEC. Our Volunteer Collective brings together people with different skills, interests and availability to support our work across programs, events, refuges, prevention and advocacy.
Once you apply, you will have a conversation with our team to find the best fit for your skills, interests and availability. From there, we will guide you through the process of applying for any specific roles or opportunities we have available.
From yoga and art therapy to hairdressing, technology support and other specialist skills, our skilled volunteers help create opportunities for connection, wellbeing and recovery. Whether you can contribute regularly or from time to time, we’d love to hear how you’d like to get involved.
Take on a regular role as part of a WAGEC team and help create safe, welcoming environments for the people we support. For all core volunteer roles, a minimum three-month commitment is required, with shifts typically on-site at our Head Office or at one of our refuge locations.
Volunteer within a specific WAGEC program like Access Mentoring, Helping Children Heal, or From Now, and be part of providing wraparound support to clients as they work toward their goals. These roles involve dedicated training, ongoing support and long-term impact.
Workplace volunteering gives organisations the opportunity to make a practical contribution to ending gender-based violence through Working Bees, donation drives, event support and other hands-on projects.
Want to help but need flexibility? Join our casual volunteer pool and hear about opportunities as they come up, from one-off volunteer shifts, to events and advocacy campaigns.
Coming Soon. Ambassadors raise awareness of WAGEC’s work, spark conversations in their communities, and support events and campaigns that advocate for safer futures for women, trans and gender-diverse people, and children.
Most volunteering opportunities take place during Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm.

This is a Skilled Volunteer role. We are looking for a volunteer with the necessary skills and experience to assist with tuning a piano at one of our refuge sites. While this is initially a one-off shift, there are also opportunities to support with piano lessons or similar.
This is a Casual Volunteer role. We are looking for volunteers with a valid driver's license and access to a car, who are happy to help us move donations and supplies between WAGEC sites. This is an essential support which allows us to receive vital donations from our community and share them across our refuge sites!

To help keep the people we support safe, all volunteers must:
Yes, currently all Volunteer Collective roles are based in NSW, and most take place on-site at WAGEC locations in and around Sydney. Unfortunately, we don’t offer remote or digital volunteering roles at this time. If you’re outside NSW and want to support WAGEC, you’re always welcome to donate, shop, or fundraise to spread awareness of gender-based violence in your networks.
No, you do not need one before applying, however all volunteers are required to obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC) and a National Police Check before starting any work or volunteering with WAGEC. If you do not already have a valid WWCC, we would recommend getting started on the process now. If you have any questions, the Office of the Children’s Guardian (OCG) has lots of useful information on how to apply for a WWCC.
No, our student placements are managed separately. If you’re looking for a placement as part of a study program, please reach out to students@wagec.org.au directly.
